The Forum is in hiatus

Thank you for visiting the NHF website. We’re on pause until January 2024 whilst we work on our vision and forward plan for the future. We’re sorry about the long pause, but it’s important work and we’ll return stronger.

In the meantime, if you’d like to contact us, email info@nottsheritage.co.uk. We aim to reply to emails within 5 working days.

Freelance Consultant Needed

The Nottinghamshire Heritage Forum (NHF) is looking for an experienced freelance consultant to meet with it and the Forum’s Management Committee to help develop its vision and mission.  The work will focus on understanding the role of the NHF by creating a shared vision, summarised in a statement, as well as a summary of the organisation’s mission.

The freelance consultant will facilitate this process, engaging the committee members and consulting heritage organisations to explore, debate and identify the core purpose of the NHF.  From this the vision and mission statements will be developed.

Please see the Consultant Brief for more information.

Autumn Meeting and Dementia Friend Training

The Forum’s Autumn Meeting 2022 was held on Tuesday, 11th October from 3-5pm at the William Booth Birthplace Museum in Sneinton, Nottingham. During the meeting Chis Harris of the Broxtowe Women’s Project, gave a presentation about partnering with local museums to help them make space for a conversation about domestic abuse and violence against women. She shared how this kind of partnership strengthens community engagement and helps support staff and volunteers. Ms Harris has worked with the National Justice Museum and is now working alongside D. H. Lawrence Birthplace, Bennerley Viaduct, Canalside Heritage Centre and other local museums, as well as supporting the Safer Museums network focusing on these issues.

During the meeting there was time to network and enjoy refreshments and after the meeting some members stayed on to tour the William Booth Birthplace Museum, most visiting for the very first time.

Prior to the Autumn Meeting, a ‘Dementia Friend’ training from 1.45-2.45pm was led by Steve Smith, Community Organiser and Community Engagement Consultant with Sneinton Alchemy CIC, during which people had the opportunity to become a certified Dementia Friend. A Dementia Friend is someone who learns about dementia so that they can help their community – or even help a family member.

Being a Dementia Friend simply means learning more about dementia, putting yourself in the shoes of someone living with the condition, and turning your understanding into action. From visiting someone you know with dementia to being more patient in a shop queue, every action counts.

Too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with. Dementia Friends help by raising awareness and understanding, so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want.

Summer Social 2022

Join us for our annual Summer Social at Erewash Museum and later moving on to Bennerley Viaduct on Thursday, 25th August 2022 from 3-5pm. This will be a social, informal event to allow us to catch up with one another and meet another Forum – the Derbyshire Museums and Heritage Forum. It will be the first time our two Forums will gather for a joint event, and as we’ll be gathering at the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border, it will prove to be a historic, symbolic event! Whether you are already a Forum member or interested in learning more about the Forum, you’re welcome to attend. Teas and coffees will be provided at Erewash Museum, but please bring a snack – or even cake – to share.

Programme:

3.00pm  Meet at Erewash Museum

Tea and coffee will be available on arrival and any treats that you bring will be made available for sharing. Toilet facilities are available. You will have the opportunity to meet other Forum members, to socialise and see the museum.

Erewash Museum: Address: High St, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 5JA https://www.erewashmuseum.co.uk/

Parking around Erewash Museum:

The Museum car park is small with only one space for Blue Badge holders. There is a pay and display car park opposite owned by Erewash Borough Council.  There are also plenty of car parks in the town centre within walking distance of the museum.  You can view the Museum’s car parking map to find the closest location to park your car. Car parking prices may vary so please check the Tariff informationon the Council’s website. The Erewash Borough Council town centre car parks are free for one hour.

3.45pm Leave Erewash Museum and move on to Bennerley Viaduct

Bennerley Viaduct: Address: Awsworth Rd, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 8PX

Options:

It is about a 20-30 minute walk to Bennerley Viaduct from Erewash Museum. You can also go by car (under 10 minutes to drive), but parking is limited around the viaduct. Parking on site, underneath the viaduct, is for exhibitors and Blue badge holders only and is accessed from the Awsworth Road, so it would be good for people to car share if possible. Car sharing can be worked out on the day. Please refer to the access information on the Visiting Bennerley Viaduct webpage for details about parking and accessing the viaduct.

4.15pm
We will gather at 4.15pm in the middle (on top) of Bennerley Viaduct (best because people walking and people driving will arrive at opposite ends of the viaduct), where you’ll be welcomed to the viaduct and Kate Crossley, Bennerley Viaduct’s Heritage and Engagement Officer, will give a short talk about the viaduct and the points of interest. This will be followed by a photo opportunity for the two Forums and the chance to walk and explore the viaduct from 4.30pm.
4.30pm
Explore the viaduct in your own time and socialise with other Forum members.
5pm Close of Summer Social
Bennerley Viaduct is open all the time, so you are welcome to stay on as long as you would like, but may need to make time allowances to return to your car (if leaving your car near Erewash Museum).
Important Information:

You should wear sensible shoes; there are uneven paths leading to the viaduct and underneath it.

The viaduct is very exposed – to wind, rain and sun, so please dress according to the weather conditions.

There are no toilets or refreshments at the viaduct – or any shelter if the weather is bad (other than underneath the viaduct).

The viaduct is – sadly – not fully accessible. From the end closest to the car parking, you have to climb a steep set of steps to the deck. There is a ramp at the end that meets the towpath of the Erewash Canal, but the towpath itself isn’t fully accessible.

There is very limited parking near the viaduct, so we do encourage car sharing, or walking.

Bennerley Viaduct staff will be on hand to give people information on the day – such as where to park, and explain the meeting point more carefully.

There is no fee to attend the Summer Social, but donations are always welcome. No need to book – just show up on the day.
The 25th of August is officially ‘Nottinghamshire Day’, but we want both counties’ Forums to feel welcome and want to stress that this is a time for coming together and celebrating heritage and the people who work, volunteer and champion heritage.

Hope to see you there!

Spring Meeting 2022

Wednesday, 30th March, 3-5pm at the Cathedral of St Barnabas, North Circus Street, Nottingham NG1 5AE

Join us for our first meeting of the year, where we’ll have the opportunity to learn about a project to restore the Pugin interior of St Barnabas Cathedral, to share with one another and to network.

Peter Rogan, Conservation Architect and Director of Peter Rogan and Associates Limited, will present on St Barnabas Cathedral’s National Lottery Pugin Heritage Project, which aims to not only restore the Pugin interior of the Cathedral but to engage with the community of Nottingham to raise awareness of the rich history of the Cathedral, a hidden Pugin gem in the heart of the city.  Working with Nottingham Trent University and conservation specialists will allow the architectural story of the building to be unlocked, which can then be shared with the public.

Peter Rogan is the Cathedral Architect to the Catholic Cathedral Church of St. Barnabas in Nottingham. The Cathedral was built in the 1830s to the designs of the important neo-Gothic architect A.W.N. Pugin.  Recent work has included support for the successful application to the Cathedral’s WW1 Fund in respect of above and below-ground drainage improvements and also improvements for access for people with disabilities.

During the meeting there will be time to network, enjoy light refreshments and there will be a guided tour of the Cathedral from 4.30pm.

A meeting agenda will be emailed prior to those who have registered.

The cost of the meeting is included in your membership.  Forum meetings are open to members (paid membership for 2021-2022) and non-members alike.  Non-members can ‘try out’ the Forum as observers for up to two meetings before membership of the Forum is required.  We’re a friendly and supportive group and hope you’ll consider joining.  For information about individual or institutional membership, please see: https://www.nottsheritage.co.uk/featured/ or contact us on info@nottsheritage.co.uk to request a membership invoice.
